This course examines and interprets the current fire legislation in the UK and explores its impact on employers and those in charge of premises. The implication of building regulations on fire precautions is examined. There is also discussion of the fundamental pre-requisites for a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment.

Who will benefit from attending?

The course is designed for all those in charge of workplaces and fire safety within buildings, such as building managers, fire safety managers and wardens, health and safety managers; it is also useful for those involved in designing and refurbishing buildings and employers who are not familiar with the current fire legislation, as well as those working within fire safety management requiring a refresher course.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, delegates gain:

    • An understanding of the background and changes in fire safety legislation.
    • An awareness of relevant fire safety legislation.
    • An awareness of the legislative and enforcement structure in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
    • An understanding of the basis for the legislative requirement to carry out a fire risk assessment.
    • An understanding of principles, and scope of fire risk assessments required by legislation.
    • A pragmatic approach that can be adopted towards the assessment of fire prevention, fire protection and management of fire safety.
    • A basic understanding of the current guidance for fire safety in premises.
    • A basic understanding of means of escape and fire protection measures.
    • An understanding of the concept of “responsible person” and their duties under the Fire Safety Order.
    • An awareness of the responsibilities of employers under the legislation.
    • An awareness of the sector specific fire safety guidance documents and their application.
    • An understanding of the enforcement process including inspections, prohibition and enforcement notices, prosecutions and determination of disputes.
